Greetings to all.

Arrow If you've already read this post on Delphi, please ignore it

First off, please let me introduce myself.

I started playing tabletop sport games when I was 15, lo so many years ago. I bought Paydirt and must have played about 500 games of the same season. Can't remember which one but it was the old 26 team NFL, before the birth of the Bucs and Seahawks. I played a 16 game regular season and playoffs, as normal, then took the under .500 teams and played a shortened season, taking the under .500 teams of that one for an even shorter season, and so on, and the same for the above .500 teams. I wound up with team rangings of 1 to 26 and did a mini-tournament. The Chargers won it all. Must have taken me 5 years.

I also had AH's Football Strategy, converting one half of the board to CFL sized field and rules, and Baseball Strategy, for which I had designed (on paper) an electrical wiring system that would enable the defense to push a button for the pitch, the offense to push a button for the batting strategy, then a master switch would be flipped which would light up one of a series of LEDs indicating the result of the play.

I went on to Statis Pro Basketball, again I forget which season but I remember Buffalo Braves and New Orleans Jazz player cards. The Bullets won the trophy after a short 20 game season. Then Statis Pro Baseball, that I shelved after a few dozen games because I got weery of filling up scorecards and compiling stats on paper and knew I couldn't enjoy the game without them.

All that was before the advent of home computers.

As I advanced in years and my career had me working on many a computer system, I found I had an inate ability to understand the inner workings for both hardware and specially software. I studied programing both as a hobby and in academic courses. During that time I forgot all about sport gaming. All those games I mentioned above went the wayside of the recycling bin. Mea culpa, cause then came the Internet, and tabletopsports.com, and Delphi Forums, and I got the itch back.

Which brings me to the reason for this thread. I cannot think of a better personnal project than to combine both of these loves, programming and gaming, to create a software package which would enable not only the playing of a game, but the compilation of results/stats/records over a season and even a career. I know there are many very good Excel helpers already out there, but unless I'm mistaken, though they help in the play by play, few collect results long term. And you gotta have Excel too.

What I would like to know from this community is the game, any sport, where there is the most need for such a project, for each of you personally. Please consider the 3 following guidelines.

First and foremost, the game itself must be freely available, as I do not wish to enfringe copyrights or take the livelyhood away from any game designer. If the game is freely available, then so will this software package. Although if I received authorization from an interested game designer, then maybe we could talk business Wink .

Second, though not a sine qua non condition, there should not already be an Excel helper for that particular game. But if there is and the game happens to be this community's preference, then, and no disrespect intended to the creator of that helper, it would most surely cause gamers to mothball it.

Third, there must not already be a software package built for it, whether its for sale or not. I don't want to reinvent the wheel here. So First and Ten and Inside the Crease and Strat whatever and APBA [insert sport here] and Pairadice, and others who fall in this category won't even be considered.

That still leaves a lot.

So here is my request to you: please mention up to 3 games, any sport, quick play, long play, whatever, ideally in order of preference, for which you would like to see a software package (Windows platform) developped for it. For playing it AND compiling stats and records long term. You may want to consider this question: have you ever thought to yourself while playing a game "Man, I wish there was another way to collect all this data than by hand"? I'm aware for many of you it is a big part of the fun But if you had a tool to do it for you, I believe it would enable you to finish a project quicker and start another with enthusiasm.

For the time being, please don't ask about cross-season modules or universal draft options or all-time greats and such like. In computer programming, nothing is impossible given time and effort. For now I'm just taking a poll to see where the need is. Once the choice is clear, then we can discuss options. And depending on those options, I would expect this package to be ready in a year's time. I'll regularly post status updates to keep you in the know. Should the need arise, I may request some help from the most knowledeable of you regarding for example the game engine, or stat collecting, or ratings calculation, even added improvements to the game which might be just too tedious to do on paper.

I'll be making my decision a month from now, December 26, 2009, Boxing Day, though it could be earlier if there is a clear overwhelming choice.

So once again, please mention up to 3 games, any sport, quick play, long play, whatever, ideally in order of preference, for which you would like to use a software package to free your hands for rolling the bones and flipping the FACs.

I look forward to your feedback, and I wish you a safe and joyous Holiday Season. Please don't drink and drive, just drink.

Interesting topic and one that is pleasing to myself and all, who want to play off a season but with time constraints, can't finish the project.

My game, Goal Pro Soccer can be utilized. I believe there was an excel helper created but for the most part, I would love to see my creation in windows. Then there are two other games.....

Power Play Hockey......There is a flipper in the TTS download section but all it does is flip cards. I do not know if the game is being marketed by anyone but if the answer is no, the game is ripe for windows and I can also add some modifications to make the game more realistic. It was the very first hockey game I owned, played many games and the pleasing aspect of the game, at that time, was the ability to create your own teams. I played hundreds and hundreds of games before moving on to other games.

Another is Real Life Basketball and for some reason, the downloads to that game are no longer on TTS so I am thinking that maybe Jeff is planning on marketing the game.

That is my take, those two would be outstanding.

Hi,
Thanks for this offer! I recently developed Rain Delay Baseball- a Helper Excel would be great- but even greater would be a software package to help in the design of the cards. There are no secrets here- the formulas are up and so are the card templates- I just don't have the time or excel know-how to make it so that i can copy data from baseball reference- let excel compute ratings based off my formulas and then have those ratings appear on the cards.

I look forward to working with you- as I also have a football game coming out as well

BGD,

Thanks for the reply. I've downloaded your game and will try it out some.

I believe you're working on v2.0 presently. The one thing I noticed, unless I'm mistaken, is pitchers can never be involved in a fielding play. The ol' comebacker, or even the sac bunt. May I suggest either a generic rating to pitchers fielding, or a third number on their cards though that might upset those who have made or are making new seasons.

Also you may want to check out the rare play chart which you can download from the same section as your game (at the least it's a great read), and the Z-Chart from the Statis Pro Baseball section. Perhaps you could find a way to adapt them if you wish it. You did name your game Rain Delay; might be fun if that happened once in a while. Wink

Talk to you soon.

Ted,
Thanks for the suggestion- yes I only included the other fielders in plays, I will continue to develop this game and definitely take this main point into consideration! I look forward to working with yoU!

Rick Dean still has the rights to Power Play. I've been trying to contact him for the past year and have hit many dead-ends.

I acquired the rights for Real Life Basketball from Jerry Faulk. As many know, this is probably my favorite game of all time. I'm currently working on revising the game, incorporating many things I added over the years, as well as a new Fast Action system.

Hi Jeff,
I was not aware that Rick Dean still had the rights to Power Play Hockey. As far as you acquiring the rights to Real Life Basketball, that is good news because that game is still one of the BETTER if not simplistic hoops games on the market......or was at one time.

I suppose that my Goal Pro Soccer can be converted into a windows software product......and with MY blessing. I just may pull out the old game and revise it slightly. My vision is to create a minute by minute game generic and when scoring opportunities arise, utilize scorers, similar to BG......

Jeff, if you have the rights, is there anything stopping you from selling the game in its original state (same with Goal! Football)?

I know I'd be interested in purchasing a copy of both games as they were originally released today if I could. I'll gladly look forward to the new and improved versions that will be released, but if there is any way I could start playing now I'll take it. Also Goal! would me a great xmas gift for one of my close friends.

I want to thank you all for your replies to my original post, and as I had stated, it's Boxing Day (EST) and I've made my decision on which game I'll do. It's a recent one, came out just this spring, and passes all the guidelines I mentioned a month back. Rain Delay Baseball. You can get it in the baseball downloads area.

I'll keep you posted on this project's developments from time to time and I expect to have it finished by this time next year. And speaking of next year, I wish you health, love and prosperity for 2010. In that order.

Adam, you'll hear from me shortly...

Hi Ted,

Slightly dissapointed that Goal Pro Soccer was not your choice but no biggie at all......Adam's game is a good one and is looking forward to seeing it computerized.

Happy New Year from now till next year to you and Ed. If and whenever Ed "Mr BZ Hockey" decides a post is worthy of his response or you do something between now and next January. BTW, where is the DL for Rain Delay BB?" I don't see it under "Baseball"?

Hi Ron,

I have been extremely under the weather the past couple weeks so bear with me......I have also been going through some personal and professional problems that has taken over my gaming as of late (preparation for a long distance move in the next several months). I will update some concerning BZH but for the moment, I do need to take care of myself....

Ed,

I am so sorry about my post. Long story short, this hasn't been the merriest of holidays around my household and I got on the web last night to "escape" for a while and ended up just being a dunce. I made a lousy night's sleep even worse because after I calmed down with other matters, I realized what an ass I had been and was pretty upset with myself all night. My sincere apologies to you (and the board). I wish nothing but the best for you in the new year and, if possible, just disregard this fools post. You are a great contributor to the hobby.

Ron
