Can anyone tell me about All-District, the high school basketball game from Action Sims? I've been tempted to get it but would like to know how it plays and opinions of it.

Rick,
Call me cynical, but a game producer offering every college team that ever played, a bull fighting game, plus professional darts and a competitive eating sim raises an eyebrow concerning product quality and depth of play.
And all for $19.99! I keep thinking about the TV ads for steak knives and cylinderical spaghetti cookers. Act now and we'll throw in "Skate & KIss", the female ice skating game, free of charge...just pay additional shipping and handling.
I might of missed it along the way, but I've never heard of Action Sims.
No sample charts/cards on the website along with rather sketchy game descriptions have me thinking caveat emptor. |

| I actually bought the Formula One game a few years ago. The game was actually very interesting and accurate. It was very involved and took quite awhile per race. The problem is they made one season ( 2006 ) and nothing else. |

Thanks for the info. I'd never heard of them before...which means nothing since I generally miss more than I catch.
So they've been around for awhile. They do seem to have a broad and varied catalog of games, many of which are very tempting.
Too bad they don't provide some more detail and graphics on their page. In the realm of game prices, $19.99 isn't a budget buster, but you don't want to blow twenty bucks on something that will sit in your closet until the Second Coming.

I've tried some of his games, and liked them. I agree, though, about the number of seasons (for games where only one season is included). I wish that more seasons were available, or either instructions for rating seasons were included. |

I believe that I have this game, but have never played it. That's not a knock against the game. I just have so many, and haven't tried it yet. I am "dusting off" and trying some games that I bought but never played, and am liking them. So, I need to give this one a try.
Here's how it works, if I recall correctly. There are team ratings for all of the boys teams from either 2006-07 or 2007-08, if I recall correctly. There's an offense rating, defense rating, and I can't recall which others. But, those are combined, and each team then knows which results chart to use. There are several charts, each based on a final rating or range of ratings. The game is then played out using these charts. I think a roll against the chart of the team in possession determines what happened (2PT, 3PT, miss, foul, free throws, etc.), and possibly even how much time elapsed. There's a gentleman on Delphi (Fred?) who has played many games with it.
I am sorry that I can't be certain or more specific. I do not have the game files with me currently. I'll try to remember to check it out and post more later. |

I'm getting the impression that there's been nothing new in terms of ratings for the games for the past four years ago.
Am I off base (again!) or is that also your take.
Some of those titles are indeed tempting (Competitive Eating!!!), but I'd like to get some miles (seasons) out of a game purchase.

Hey dude,It's funny you mentioned the game"Kiss and cry" The figure Skating game I bought that hoping it would interest my lady friend in our great hobby. I deciced to buy it and give it a test run before playing with her. I would have to caution anybody buying this game . There isn't any real strategy.If your into the major sports with strategy You might not like this. I like a change of pace . And having said that I like the game. It's like watching a event on tv and you get the results. Alot of skaters from 2006. And FACS NO charts.So you don't need alolt of room. It reminds me of Jeffs Ultra quick Wrestling game. Also I would compare it to Yahtzee only with FACS. I do enjoy it. But they only have one season also. 2006. My theory and this is only a theory. Is that there wasn't enough interest to warrant the work to put out more seasons. But,if interest aND A FEW E-MAILS WERE SENT TO THE CREATOR MAYBE HE'LL CREATE MORE SEASONS. ---BRIAN |

Howdy,
I bought this game a few years ago and played it quire often. I played my high school conference in Illinois and my neighborhoods school schedule in Nevada. It rates the teams by offence, defence, overall, offensive and defensive speed, home and road strength, and my favorite, out of conference ability.
It doesn't have individual players but does a good job rating 99% of the nations teams.
Game time is about 30 mins. You can use dice or action cards. It has a few charts. The one issue is you need to use a different possession chart for each team and game. Once you figure the teams game ratings, you gave 150 possible charts that could be used. I either printed before each game or just used my computer screen.
I really enjoy the game. Ive played well over 100 games.
I also purchased their college football game which us similar to the HS basketball in theory and both soccer games.
Since there is printing involved I think theý are a bit overpriced but as for gameplay I would give Action Sims a 7.5 out of 10.

Thanks a ton!!! You gave me an excellent overview. Sounds very interesting.
Not scientific, just my view, but to me, it seems that all of the interesting dice/boards are put out by the small, independents these days.
On another forum there was a discussion about the pros and cons involved with this phemonena.
The general conclusions were that the independents provide sims for a lot of niche sports that the big guys don't want to touch. Can you see SOM or APBA doing a high school basketball game???
The downside, unfortunately, is that after a couple of seasons, many of the independents walk away and there are no regular updates.
The other criticism is the one you made...price in proportion to quality of game materials. Increasingly, you find yourself buying games that are e-book downloads.
These are both valid points. With regard to the first, I've noticed that a growing number of small game producers seem more than willing to share their game formulae with their customers. It's not an ideal situation, but at least you get the means to create current seasons for some of the games should the creator close shop.
Concerning the printing/price issue, yeah, it's a pain to go through the hassle...whenever possible, I'll pay extra for a hard copy. Unfortuantely, it's become a fact of life these days. You have to wonder, pre-2000, how many of the small guys had a couple of hundred copies of their unsold games taking up space in their garage or basement.
I guess, if you look on the bright side of it, the ability today to produce a game on-demand and avoid the costs of printing is incentive for a fellow gamer who has an idea for an interesting sim. To be sure they're investing a lot of time creating a game...but at least they're not laying out money to print up copies of something that might not sell.
That has to be much easier to justify to a wife who's asking why you're spending all that time in the "man cave"!
And, once again, thankd for taking the time to describe the HS basketball game so thoroughly.
