2017 PDC SEASON

I am replaying the 2017 PDC Season, using Let’s Play Darts http://sportsreplays.net/pgibson.html

First up it’s the 2017 UK Open at Butlins Resort, Minehead.

The so called ‘FA Cup of darts’, due to its random draw system, was replayed from the last 32 onwards. I took the actual last 32 draw and made a random draw for each subsequent round.

2017 UK OPEN

March 2017

LAST 32

D GURNEY 10-2 M WEBSTER
A NORRIS 10-4 B VAN DE PAS
R VAN BARNEVELD 10-2 R MEULENKAMP
P WRIGHT 10-3 D CHISNALL
G PRICE 10-0 D PALLETT
K HUYBRECHTS 10-5 T EVETTS
V VAN DER VOORT 10-1 J KLAASEN
P HOGAN 6-10 A LEWIS
W O’CONNOR 10-4 R BAXTER
M LUKEMAN 6-10 C DOBEY
J CULLEN 10-6 C REYES
S WHITLOCK 10-5 D VAN DUIJVENBODE
A TABERN 10-7 J MICHAEL
R CROSS 10-2 R SEARLE
I WHITE 10-1 K SHEPHERD
M SMITH 10-3 J WATTIMENA

The big match of the round saw Peter Wright breeze past Dave Chisnall, with Snakebite averaging just below 100 and comfortably winning 10-3. The highlight of the round was the match between Paul Hogan and Adrian Lewis, with Hogan averaging 99.85 and hitting 7 180’s but losing the last four legs to go out.

LAST 16

C DOBEY 5-10 K HUYBRECHTS
J CULLEN 3-10 A LEWIS
S WHITLOCK 8-10 M SMITH
V VAN DER VOORT 4-10 G PRICE
R VAN BARNEVELD 10-6 I WHITE
A NORRIS 7-10 D GURNEY
R CROSS 10-2 W O’CONNOR
A TABERN 1-10 P WRIGHT

The Simon Whitlock versus Michael Smith match didn’t disappoint. At 8-7 to Whitlock it looked like being the Australian’s day, but Bully Boy took his performance to another level when he needed it most and took the next 3 legs to make the last eight. Elsewhere, there were comfortable wins for Snakebite, Adrian Lewis and Rob Cross and Barney averaged 100.42 and hit 7 180’s in his 10-6 win over Ian White.

QUARTER-FINALS

R CROSS 9-10 P WRIGHT
K HUYBRECHTS 7-10 M SMITH
G PRICE 10-8 A LEWIS
R VAN BARNEVELD 10-8 D GURNEY

Four great matches, with Rob Cross and Peter Wright taking it the distance in a pulsating contest. For Cross it was a case of the one that got away, as he had two match darts leading 9-8. Cross missed with both and Snakebite stepped in to take the match into a deciding leg which he took to book a place in the last four. Barney had to be at the top of his game to edge Superchin, averaging over 100 and hitting 10 out of 18 doubles.

SEMI-FINALS

P WRIGHT 11-7 G PRICE

It was a case of ‘trebles for show and doubles for dough’ as Snakebite took full advantage of missed doubles by Gerwyn Price to book his place in the final. At 6-6 Price’s finishing started to let him down and missed opportunities allowed Peter Wright to open up a two leg lead at 9-7. In the 17th leg the Welshman had two shots at a double to reduce the arrears but again failed to take his chance and Wright punished him to lead 10-7 and sealed the match by winning the next leg.

(3 DART AVGs: WRIGHT 98.76 PRICE 97.59)
(CHECKOUT PCT: WRIGHT 39.29 PRICE 35.00)

M SMITH 7-11 R VAN BARNEVELD
In another high-quality match, it was Barney that always had the edge. While Bully Boy was busy hitting 180s Raymond van Barneveld was Mr Consistent and was able to keep his young opponent at arms length with solid scoring.

(3 DART AVGs: SMITH 95.99 VAN BARNEVELD 99.2Cool
(CHECKOUT PCT: SMITH 43.75 VAN BARNEVELD 44.00)

Tale of the tape ahead of the final:

TOURNAMENT 3 DARTS AVGs:
P WRIGHT 98.94
R VAN BARNEVELD 99.89

TOURNAMENT CHECKOUT PCT:
P WRIGHT 44.57
R VAN BARNEVELD 48.81

TOURNAMENT 180s:
P WRIGHT 9
R VAN BARNEVELD 16

Barney had the edge in terms of scoring and finishing and would start the final as favourite, but this one could go either way.

FINAL

P WRIGHT 11-9 R VAN BARNEVELD

A great way to end an exciting tournament, as two of the worlds finest played out a terrific final and Peter Wright finally won his first world ranking event. Snakebite flew out the blocks and stormed to a 7-3 lead courtesy of heavy scoring and deadly finishing and, at that stage, the final looked like being somewhat of an anti-climax. Barney, however, was able to stay in the match but at 10-6 down and with Peter Wright requiring just one more leg for victory the match appeared to be over. Barney made it 10-7 and then the drama kicked in, as nerves got the better of Snakebite and he missed two shots at a double to win the match and lost the 18th leg. Things got worse for Wright in the next leg, as Barney made it 10-9 and you could sense the trophy slipping out of Snakebite’s hands. With the crowd pumped and the pressure on Peter Wright had one shot to win the match in the 20th leg and he held his nerve to take it and win his first ever world ranking event.

Game, shot and the match…….Peter Wright!

A great way to start the 2017 PDC Season and Snakebite a deserving champion.
