Just wondering what opinions are about the use of FACs vs Dice as a random generator.
I've always been a dice guy, but am quickly discovering the advantages of FACs.
Cheers! |

I generally create a Spread Sheet helper program for my games that incorporates dice and regular table lookups. For instance with Legends of Boxing, my scoresheet has dice fields that I "roll" using the F9 button. After each roll, a field displays the various Mode Card results based on the dice roll. It's kind of a shortcut dice method.
Never been a FAC guy, perhaps if I could print top quality FAC's I would change my tune but I always seem to have tatterred paper or light card stock FAC's... |

| I have always been a dice guy. I think it is the only way to get true randomness. |

Definitely prefer dice.
--easy to replace if lost, not fun to replace whole set of FAC for a few missing cards. Sometimes not even aware any are missing.
--dice are cheap
--dice are random, without shuffling, and even no shuffle decks do have limits on what can come up next, as you go through deck. |

I like the FAC's. I finds it speeds up the football games, Goal and Grid Iron Wars. Having everything on a FAC cuts down on chart look ups, I still use dice in some games because the grand kids like the feel of the dice and looking for that lucky roll. I believe that FAC's will greatly improve the speed of Main Event, and will be making an order soon.

Thanks folks! I'm enjoying the opinions. Hope more share their insights (rickert?)
Also, to Jeff Downey please post some expert feedback on the random integrity of FACs at your earliest convenience.
Cheers! |

I grew up using dice for baseball and football and FAC for basketball.
I use to prefer dice, but lately have waffled between dice and FAC.
Cards seem to speed up game play and make things flow more smoothly. Also, since most of my play time is at night after others have gone to bed, I like the quiet cards provide... though they don't quiet my exclamations of joy or frustration.
FAC also aren't as limiting as dice even though dice can give you more random results within a game. Then again, FAC can give you just as random results if there are enough of them and depending how they are used. |

| Dice can be easily replicated with a random number generator if sitting by a computer or using a smart phone, its like you have the dice with you wherever you go without having to carry around a FAC deck. |

agreed. I often use random.org in lieu of real dice.
A FAC can provide so much more than a simple random number though. They can also save space by eliminating charts. When traveling it is easier to play a game that uses FAC than dice and two or more charts.
Still, I do prefer the tactile feel of rolling dice than flipping a card for most games. |

I'm finding this assessment by statfreak to be very spot on. |

| more and more games are now available, thanks to great game providers like Jeff Downey, via pdf format, print and play. yes you can order the often colored FAC(and wait and pay more), but more and more, especially with pdf format, you will be cutting out FAC until your hand starts to cramp up. Buying more heavy card stock and more ink. In some cases the cards are not fully aligned, marked easily for cutting and leave you with nice, but slightly misaligned cards and the lasting experience of never wanting to cut FACs ever again. Dice with a few charts seem pretty good after your hand starts cramping up and its time to refill the ink cartridges again. |

I like both dice and FACs.
When I play Statis Pro Baseball, FACs feel 'right'.
When I play a game that is designed for dice, dice feel 'right'
There are anti-randomness arguments against FACs, but dice have plenty of randomness problems, too: bad dice (I've encountered two non-random dice, including one from GameScience) and poor shaking/throwing techniques.
I seriously doubt that everyone using dice are getting random results. |

| FACS...they just seem so much easier to use...quieter & you don't have to keep picking a misroll up off the floor etc. |
