APBA Hockey

First, a thought: is hockey the most difficult game to simulate on the board? I've been looking for a great game for 20 years now, and I've tried several--with Strat-o-Matic leading so far. Last month, I ordered APBA Hockey. Result: An interestting try, with some good features like forechecking ratings, clearing ratings for d-men, and a rare play chart. However, shooting leaves me cold. There is virtually no difference made between a slapshot from the blueline, a tip-in, or a breakaway--and 'lucky dice' determine too many key results. With all the user-posted 'add-ons' available to the Strat hockey gamer, APBA finishes second--but there's room to improve both games...
