Tabletop Sports Weekly 2-10-03
(631 total words in this text) (1180 Reads)
Happy Monday! And welcome to another edition of Tabletop Sports Weekly.
I have no submissions this week, which, I kind of anticipated. So,
you are stuck with my "monologue" and that's about it. I'll try to
dig up something from the recesses of my brain to stimulate some conversation
and debate...
On the tabletop front for me, I've been quite active over the past week.
While I haven't completed anythign of consequence, I've certainly dabbled
in a lot of different games. I started the week off by playing Rick's
Fast Football version 2. I really like the game, as it moves quickly
and does offer individual player stats. In the games I've run, the
scores have been on the high side, but the correct teams seem to be winning.
Overall, I'm really impressed with his ideas.
I also spent some time this week with Second Season Football. After
playing Rick's game, I had the "football bug". I readily admit that
Football has never been my number 1 passion on the tabletop. I've never
found a football game that has satisfied me with decent playing times and/or
realistic results. In fact, other than Basic Strat Football, I've never
found a football game in which I could complete an entire game. I just
seem to lose interest. So, when I saw Second Season advertised on Delphi
at a great price by one of the forum members, I bought it. I read the
rules with great excitement. Second Season is wonderfully thought out,
and factors in lineman, as well as individual defensive players. I
was hooked! However, after a quarter of play, I've not returned to
it. The chart flipping is killing my attention span, I think.
i'm going to tab the chart book tonight, and try that. I really love
the design of the game, and think I'll love the game as well. Once
I can adjust my thinking to getting used to the flipping.
Let's see...I also played some Rivalries College Basketball, Mickey's Fastbreak,
and Crunch Time Basketball this week. Rivalries is a nice little game
that simulates the "flow" of college basketball pretty well. There
are a lot of dice rolls, which can cause some distraction, but overall, it's
a nice hoops game. Mickey's Fastbreak has been discussed here quite
a bit, and there are many that swear by it. I think I fall into the
catagory of liking it a lot, but for me, it's not the be all, end all of
tabletop basketball. I still lean towards Real Life Basketball as being
the best hoops title I've ever played. But, Mickey's is pretty close.
Crunch Time is another decent offering. It's a bit more basic than
either of the other games I've mentioned today. But, it also plays
faster, which has its own merit. I think if I had a season set with
this game that interested me, I'd probably play it a lot. AS I grow
older, I find games that play quicker hold my interest a lot longer.
This coming week, I hope to play some Football Fever, Gabriel's All-Star
Boxing, and Dave's yet to be renamed NASCAR racing.
On the website front, things are starting to get back to where they were.
I've had several people upload files, and I've added quite a few myself.
We are about where we were before the crash. I think I'll post a message
or two on the various Delphi and Yahoo forums to get those that may have
been lost in the site crash back into the fold. While this week saw
a big jump in subscriptions, we still aren't where we were before the dreaded
virus...
Ok, now for the topics to stimulate discussion... ;)
1. What is the best designed game you have ever played on the tabletop?
What makes the design so unique?
2. What can I add ot the website that would make it more enjoyable to you?
3. What game would you like to see on the tabletop that has yet to be correctly?
That should at least spark a few responses!
I'll see everyone next week.
