the negamco hockey game is a pretty good game by itself, and didn't
require as much "tweaking" as the basketball game did. nevertheless,
there were some sticking points that needed to be changed. again, as
with basketball, these updates assume that you have a working knowledge
of the negamco hockey game. the biggest change is that you don't use
that play chart that had "pass to center" , "intercepted by left
defenseman" any more. i now have eleven separate charts to use, one for
each of the 11 grades i've given to players. their grade is called
their PASS grade. more on that later.

anyway--the formulas for the cards------

goals= goals/games x 80 (rounded off)
assists= assists/games x 80(rounded off)
PIM= penalty minutes / games / 10 (rounded off)
PK= assists / games x 80 + 20
AGG= penalty minutes / games x 80, then see chart
PASS= assists/games x 80 then refer to the chart

EVERY player will have his goals range start with 1-. CENTERS will have
their assists, pim, and pk range start with 1-. RIGHT WINGS will have
their assists, pim, and pk start with 16-. LEFT WINGS will have their
assists, pim, and pk start with 31-. DEFENSMEN will have their assists,
pim, and pk start with 46-.

lets do an example. how about craig hartsburg, defenseman, minnesota
north stars, 1981-82 season. here were his stats that season:

games--76
goals--17
assists--60
pim--117

so, here is the numbers for his card.

goals--17/76x80=17.894736, rounded off to 18
assists--60/76x80=63.157888, rounded off to 63
pim=117/76x80/10=12.315788, rounded off to 12
pk=60/76x80+20=83.157888, rounded off to 83

so here is what his card would look like

craig hartsburg
       d
pass--A
goals--1-18
assists--38-100
pim--46-57
pk--18-100
agg--  -1
81/82 n stars

ok--here is the grade you give to players for their "pass" rating

first, calculate assists/gamex80. then match up that number to the
chart below

SUPERSTAR--81 or more
AAA---73-80
AA--65-72
A--57-64
B--49-56
C--41-48
D--33-40
E--25-32
F--17-24
G--9-16
SHANK--0-8

(what, pray tell, is a shank? kinda an inside joke. a shank is really
any person who is terrible at something. in the world of music, michael
bolton is a shank. in baseball, bob uecker was a shank. you don't have
to call that last rating "shank" if you don't want to. call the last
rating "UNCLE BILL" if you like!!)

ok--now the aggressiveness, or agg chart
first, calculate penalty minutes / games / 80. then refer to the chart
below

0-99--------     0
100-199-----    -1
200-299-----    -2
300-399------   -3
400-or more --- -4 (and probably rename the player either dave the
hammer schultz or tiger williams!!)

and now, your 11 new play charts. a player will play from the play
chart that matches his passing rating, unless the man defending him has
an agg rating of one, then use the chart that's one worse. agg of two,
use the chart that's two worse. agg of three, three worse, and so on.

ok--here's your 11 play boards. now, here is the save rating to give
goalies--

GAA             SAVE RANGE
2.10                1-52
2.20                1-51
2.30                1-50
2.40                1-49

etc etc etc
4.20                1-31
4.30                1-30
4.40                1-29

etc etc etc

on the play charts, if a player is listed as pasing to himself (gretzky
gets PASS TO C), just assume that player is skating with the puck,
unless........

it's a power play, then that would be a shot for the player. also in
the power play, all players on the power play get to go one play chart
better, so a player with a pass rating of "B" would use the "A" column
for the duration of the penalty. also, if you yank your goalie at the
end of a period/game, use this rule. if your play result is listed as a
pass to a position that has two players of that position on the ice due
to the extra attacker, (example--play reult is pass to rw, and you have
two right wings in the game because you pulled your goalie), then the
pass can go to either of the, in the example, right wings. and if a
player is listed as passing to himself when you have an extra attacker
on the ice because you yanked your goalie, then that is a shot as well,
just like when you're in the power play.

remember to change your lines and rotate your defensemen. i change
lines every four to five minutes of ice time, and rotate the defensemen
as well. remember--100 random numbers per period.
