2019 Cup Series replay
DaveP
I did a 1979 replay back on the old forum, but this is my first attempt at a modern replay. The stage format definitely gives the races a different feel. I did not use the free pass/lucky dog optional rule in this race, but probably will in later ones.

***************

Race #1 - Daytona 500 (Feb. 17, 2019)

Pole winner: William Byron (193.765 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Kyle Larson
Stage 2 winner: Martin Truex, Jr.

Race winner: Chase Elliott (avg. speed 179.245)

Lead changes: 9 (7 drivers)
Led most laps: Kyle Larson
Cautions: 12 for 47 laps

Race notes: Chase Elliott managed to keep the #9 car out of trouble in a wreck-filled race, including one in the closing laps that took out leader Martin Truex, Jr. Elliott's only challenge was the final one, as he easily passed a slower Erik Jones car to take the checkered flag.

Tried out the free pass/lucky dog rule in this race, added some excitement, think I will stick with it. Also, for the last challenge at the end of each stage, I required the challenger to be on the lead lap, used priority rules if he was not.

Race #2 - Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (Atlanta Motor Speedway - 2/24/19)

Pole winner: Chase Elliott (181.157 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Joey Logano
Stage 2 winner: Kyle Busch

Race winner: Denny Hamlin (avg. speed 178.567)

Lead changes: 6 (6 drivers)
Led most laps: Joey Logano
Cautions: 2 for 12 laps
Lucky Dogs: Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano (Closing Laps)

Race notes:

--After missing a couple of early chances to take the lead from Joey Logano (Green Flag Pit Stops, Challenge at the end of Stage 1), Denny Hamlin finally found a way around the #22 car at the Final Challenge.

--Much cleaner racing compared to the Daytona 500. The Atlanta Motor Speedway has no change in the Contact ratings (Daytona was -1).

Race #3 - Pennzoil 400 (Las Vegas Motor Speedway - 3/03/19)

Pole winner: William Byron (179.296 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Joey Logano
Stage 2 winner: Kyle Busch

Race winner: Ryan Blaney (avg. speed 140.794)

Lead changes: 10 (8 drivers)
Led most laps: Kyle Busch
Cautions: 3 for 18 laps
Lucky Dog: Austin Dillon

Race notes:

--This race looked like it belonged to Kyle Busch. He led the most laps, and had the lead after the Closing Laps Pit Crew segment. During the Closing Laps Green Flag segment, he fought off challenges from Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott and Erik Larson, but then Brad Keselowski (-1 difference) rolled a 10 to take the lead, and the #18 car never had another chance.

--Ryan Blaney picked up his first win, passing Erik Jones on the Final Challenge (both had 8 Race ratings). Blaney briefly held the lead early in the race, after passing Kevin Harvick. It was his third straight top 10 finish, and he currently leads the standings with 121 points, trailed by Chase Elliott with 117 points.

Race #4 - Ticket Guardian 500 (ISM Raceway - Avondale, AZ - 3/10/19)

Pole winner: Clint Bowyer (141.209 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Kurt Busch
Stage 2 winner: Kyle Busch

Race winner: Martin Truex, Jr. (avg. speed 137.734)

Lead changes: 8 (7 drivers)
Led most laps: Denny Hamlin
Cautions: 5 for 32 laps

Race notes:

--First win of the season for Martin Truex, Jr. He also placed 6th in Stage 1 and 2nd in Stage 2, for a total of 54 points on the day.

--This ended up as a 2-car race between Truex, Jr. and Denny Hamlin. They both avoided damage on a minor Contact event in the Closing Laps. There was no Green Flag racing (needed a 8-12 roll), so it came down to the Final Challenge, Truex Jr. edging the #11 car for the win (needed 7-12 to pass, rolled a 7).

Race #5 - Auto Club 400 (Auto Club Speedway - Fontana, CA - 3/17/19)

Pole winner: Jimmie Johnson (184.478 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Brad Keselowski
Stage 2 winner: Kevin Harvick

Race winner: Ryan Blaney (avg. speed 158.458)

Lead changes: 10 (8 drivers)
Led most laps: Kyle Busch
Cautions: 4 for 22 laps

Race notes:

--Second win for Ryan Blaney. He also won the Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas.

--Looked like Kevin Harvick was on his way to a big day after a slow start this season. He won Stage 2, took the lead during the Closing Laps thanks to some great pit work on a green flag pit stop, and defended his lead on the final green flag sequence versus four consecutive challengers, including Keselowski and Elliott. However, the last green flag challenger, Kurt Busch (-1), needed a minimum of 8 to pass and he got it. Blaney was the final challenger, and that was that.

Race #6 - STP 500 (Martinsville Speedway - Martinsville, VA- 3/24/19)

Pole winner: William Byron (97.765 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Martin Truex, Jr.
Stage 2 winner: Joey Logano

Race winner: Joey Logano (avg. speed 94.255)

Lead changes: 4 (4 drivers)
Led most laps: Martin Truex, Jr.
Cautions: 10 for 80 laps
Lucky Dog: Chase Elliott

Race notes:

--First win for Joey Logano, which moves him into 3rd place in the overall standings. He took the lead from Kyle Busch during the main Pit Stops Under Caution segment, lost it to Kevin Harvick during the Closing Laps Green segment (both have a 9 Race Rating), then regained the lead on the last lap to take the checkered flag.

--Great day for Martin Truex, Jr., even though he came up a bit short. He passed William Byron on the Pole challenge, then kept the lead all the way through Stage 1, finally passed by Kyle Busch in the Stage 2 Green segment.

--Heading west for the next race, the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Race #7 - O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 (Texas Motor Speedway - Ft. Worth, TX - 3/31/19)

Pole winner: William Byron (188.765 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Chase Elliott
Stage 2 winner: Martin Truex, Jr.

Race winner: Martin Truex, Jr. (avg. speed 182.615 mph)

Lead changes: 6 (7 drivers)
Led most laps: Martin Truex, Jr.
Cautions: 5 for 29 laps
Lucky Dog: Alex Bowman, Aric Almirola

Race notes:

--Another great race for Martin Truex, Jr. and his JGR Bass Pro Shops/Tracker ATVs #19 car. He won both Stage 2 and also took the checkered flag for the second time this season. Definitely had some luck, no Green Flag racing in the closing laps, and no Final Challenge.

--A couple of big crashes, which took out 8 drivers, including Joey Logan, Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick.

--Heading to Bristol next, for the Food City 500.

Race #8 - Food City 500 (Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol, TN - 4/07/19)

Pole winner: Austin Dillon (130.696 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Clint Bowyer
Stage 2 winner: Brad Keselowski

Race winner: Brad Keselowski (avg. speed 124.811 mph)

Lead changes: 11 (10 drivers)
Led most laps: Joey Logano
Cautions: 11 for 88 laps

Race notes:

--First win of the year for Brad Keselowski. There were four lead changes in the Closing Laps Green segment, and Keselowski was the last challenger of that group. He didn't have to face a Final Challenge.

--More big crashes in this race (-2 Contact rating for Bristol), involving many of the top drivers, including Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Chase Elliott.

--Next up is the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway.

Race #9 - Toyota Owners 400 (Richmond Raceway - Richmond, VA - 4/13/19)

Pole winner: Brad Keselowski (124.391 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Kyle Larson
Stage 2 winner: Ryan Blaney

Race winner: Kyle Busch (avg. speed 119.623 mph)

Lead changes: 10 (10 drivers)
Led most laps: Kyle Larson
Cautions: 8 for 66 laps

Race notes:

--First win of the year for Kyle Busch, who now holds a solid lead in the points standings over Denny Hamlin, 360-330.

--Only 1 car collected in a crash (2 in the actual race), Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who was involved in a minor incident during the main part of the race. There were no Mechanical retirements, all drivers tested had ratings of 10 or 9 (zero Mech. retirements in the actual race as well).

--Next up is the Geico 500 at Talladega.

Race #10 - Geico 500 (Talladega Superspeedway - Talladega, AL - 4/28/19)

Pole winner: Kevin Harvick (192.783 mph)

Stage 1 winner: Kyle Larson
Stage 2 winner: Martin Truex, Jr.

Race winner: Justin Haley (avg. speed 179.409 mph)

Lead changes: 8 (8 drivers)
Led most laps: Kyle Larson
Cautions: 9 for 32 laps

Race notes:

--Justin Haley was only in 3 races in 2019, but managed to win one of them, Daytona on July 7 (due to a late crash, bad weather and some pitting strategy). In this one, he took the lead from Alex Bowman in the Closing Laps Green Flag segment, then successfully defended challenges from the four drivers who followed, including Chase Elliott and Clint Bowyer. The Final Challenge also came from Bowyer, who nearly caught Haley at the checkered flag (7 rating for Bowyer, 8 for Haley, needed an 8, rolled a 7).

--Haley benefited from the Lucky Dog in the main section of the race. He had been penalized earlier for speeding in the pits.

--Heading to Dover next for the Gander RV 400.
